Third-party scripts: an audit that takes an hour

List every tag, name its owner, and delete the two nobody can account for. That is the whole method.

Open the network panel, filter to third-party origins, and write down every one. Beside each, put a person’s name. The tags with no name beside them are your first deletions, and they are usually the largest.

  1. Inventory.Every third-party origin, with bytes and blocking time.
  2. Ownership.A person, not a team. Teams do not answer emails about tag managers.
  3. Remove and watch.Delete one, wait a week, and see whether anybody notices.

Every audit we have run found at least one script for a tool the company had stopped paying for.
