About

We measure real sites on real devices, then write down what actually moved the numbers.

This publication started in a support channel, where two engineers kept reading the same sentence: “I don’t know, it just feels slow.” Feels slow is not something anyone can fix.

Why we built this

Performance problems are common, slow-moving, and easy to forget by the time anyone opens a profiler. Field data fixes that. Six weeks of real measurements turns “it feels slow” into a stage you can point at in thirty seconds.

  • Every article is written or reviewed by an engineer who ships production front ends.
  • We name our sources, publish our traces, and say plainly when the evidence is thin.
  • We do not sell a framework, and we do not take framework advertising.

These are defaults, not rules

Everything here is a starting point measured on other people’s sites. Your stack will disagree somewhere, and your numbers win.

The team

Four people, one editorial board, and a design studio that has drawn more flame charts than it expected to.

Ana Fielding

Performance engineer

Fourteen years shipping front ends. Writes the guides and reviews everything else.

Sam Kettleborough

Performance engineer

Runs the editorial board and answers the questions nobody wants to ask twice.

Priya Raman

Accessibility specialist

Screen readers, focus order, and getting teams to test with the keyboard before the audit.

Common questions

Do you take sponsorships?
One sponsor per month, marked as a sponsor, never inside an article. Sponsors see the post at the same time you do and get no say in what it says.
Which browsers do you test?
The last two versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari, plus Safari on a four-year-old iPhone. If something only works in one engine, we say so in the post.
Can I republish an article?
Yes, with a link back and no edits to the numbers. Translations are welcome and we will link to yours from the original.
Is any of this behind a paywall?
No. Every article, trace and budget file is free. The workshop pays for the writing.
